LESSONS
On this page, you will find examples of lesson plans that I wrote and taught during my student teaching experience at Robbinsville High School.
MUSIC IN SOCIETY
Music in Society is an arts elective at Robbinsville High School that focuses on music appreciation. The course covers a wide range of styles of music, and challenges students to think critically about music. Students practice listening to, analyzing, composing, and performing music so that they can gain a deeper understanding of the music that they listen to, as well as styles they might not be familiar with.
• This Four Chord unit plan focuses on the structure and composition of popular songs. Before creating their own songs, students practiced creating a song together. The class decided to write a song about pineapples, and then chose instruments, rhythmic patterns, and timbres that they felt represented that concept. After creating a loop using jamstudio.com, the students wrote lyrics and melodies that they sang over the chords. Click here to listen to the loop for "The Pineapple Song."

• This unit on Aleatoric music challenges students to listen to a style of music that may sound strange to them, and then compose and perform pieces in this style. Click here to see the assessment associated with this project.

|
• The Music and Art unit focuses on the relationship between music and visual art, and how specific musical elements and moods can be represented visually through art.

CHORUS
The RHS Raven Chorus is composed of students in grades 9-12. No audition is required to sing in the Raven Chorus. The Select Choir, which is auditioned, is integrated into the Raven Chorus. The students in Select Choir serve as section leaders, and are pulled out of large rehearsals for rehearsal of their own repertoire with the conductor. Click here to see videos of rehearsals and performances.
